As a life coach, I often hear the phrase “give more than you receive” thrown around as a key to success and happiness. And while there is certainly some truth to this idea, it’s important to remember that balance is key in all aspects of life.
Yes, giving to others can be incredibly fulfilling and can help us build strong relationships and a sense of purpose. However, it’s important to make sure that we’re not sacrificing our own needs and desires in the process.
When working towards long-term goals, it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we need to constantly be sacrificing in order to achieve success. But the truth is, it’s just as important to find joy and fulfillment in the present moment as it is to work towards our future goals.
So how do we strike a balance between sacrifice and enjoyment?
When creating any plans or setting goals, you must start with your priorities. Take some time to think about what’s most important to you in the long-term. What are you willing to sacrifice and what is a non-negotiable? Be honest with yourself. This could be anything from career goals to personal relationships to health and wellness. Once you have a clear understanding of your priorities, it will be easier to make decisions about where to focus your time and energy.
Secondly, it’s important to take care of yourself both physically and mentally in order to have the energy and motivation to work towards your goals. This could mean anything from getting enough sleep, to spa day, to exercise, to turning your phone off, or to taking a relaxing bath at the end of a long day.
Thirdly, while it’s important to keep your long-term goals in mind, it’s equally important to find joy and fulfillment in the present moment. Practice gratitude daily for where you currently are in the journey and what you’ve overcome to accomplish past goals. This could mean celebrating small victories along the way or simply taking time to enjoy your hobbies and passions. You may realize that similar tactics or processes can help achieve the long-term goal you are working towards currently.
Remember, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to finding balance in life. It’s important to listen to your own needs and desires and make decisions accordingly. By prioritizing both sacrifice and enjoyment, you’ll be well on your way to achieving long-term success and happiness.
